Duty on a string of items is expected to be cut or removed with the passing of the Customs Tariff Amendment Act 2026 in the House of Assembly.

The Bill — designed to reduce the financial burden on families and businesses — was read in Parliament today by Wayne Furbert, the Junior Minister of Finance.

It was approved with no objections.

The legislation will lower the duty rate on building materials and supplies, eliminate customs duty on selected motor vehicle parts and lower the duty rate on selected goods deemed to be essential commodities.

It will also lower the duty rate on fresh flowers, eliminate customs duty for diesel and fuel oils used by Belco for the production of electricity, introduce duty relief for goods for local professional musicians and participants in the Bermuda Day Parade.

The measures, which follow cuts made in the previous fiscal year, make changes to the principal Act of 1970.

Mr Furbert said: “This legislation is a primary tool in this Government’s mission to lower the cost of living and stimulate economic development by reducing the duty on imported goods.”

Parliamentarians also approved a range of fee reductions intended to support Bermuda’s farmers.

The Government Fees Amendment Regulations 2026 removes government fees related to applications, testing, inspection and shipment processing for products needed for food production for registered farmers.

The changes, announced in the 2026-27 Budget Statement, are intended to lower barriers for farmers, allowing them to grow more food more efficiently and at lower cost.

Douglas De Couto, the Shadow Minister of Finance, said that the Opposition backed the Bill, noting that the One Bermuda Alliance had been calling for better support for the island’s agriculture industry.
