Legal groundwork laid for price comparison tool

Legislative amendments to allow the introduction of a price comparison tool for budget-conscious shoppers was approved in the House of Assembly on Friday.

The Cost of Living Amendment Act 2026 broadens the means by which price information can be shared publicly to include “electronic or digital real-time indicators, systems and means”.

David Burt, the Premier, said the legislation was a technical amendment to pave the way for the long-promised price comparison tool, allowing the public to compare the retail price of commonly purchased grocery store items.

Mr Burt said: “The digital platform is designed to enhance price transparency through a user friendly web-based system that allows consumers in Bermuda to easily access, view and compare the price of grocery items across all major supermarkets.”

He said that legislation allowed the Government to collect price information about essential goods, but the amendments would open the door for improved communication of that information to the public.

Mr Burt confirmed that the pricing information gathered would just be the price displayed on shelves.
