Public Service pension reform up for debate in the House
The House of Assembly is set to debate pension reforms today, while updates are expected to be provided on efforts to bolster housing on the island.
The pensions package for Public Service workers, which went through policy reforms last year, is to go before legislators to to modify “provisions which do not properly reflect the intended policy reforms of 2025”.
The Public Service Superannuation Amendment Bill 2026 is up for debate by MPs in the House of Assembly, along with some amendments to supplementary budget estimates for two preceding fiscal years — 2023-24 and 2024-25.
Zane DeSilva, the Minister of Housing and Municipalities, is expected to deliver an update on government housing initiatives, while David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, will speak on advancing digital finance in Bermuda.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, will discus a pilot hearing support programme and efforts to improve disability inclusion.
Meanwhile, Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, will discuss commissioning new firefighting vehicles for the airport.
Alexa Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs, is expected to speak on the reconstitution of the Space and Satellite Advisory Panel, while Jaché Adams will speak on strengthening government through strategic investment.
Mr Adams is also expected to propose to move a motion to purchase the vacant Compass Point Building under the Acquisition of Land Act 1970.
The five-storey commercial building, located on Bermudiana Road in Pembroke, was listed for nearly $20 million in 2024.
Several new Bills are set to be tabled during the session including the Retail Shops (Temporary Customs Duty Relief for Capital Investments) Amendment Act, the Payroll Tax Amendment Act, the Bermuda Immigration and Protection Amendment Act and the Electricity Amendment Act.
