Premier celebrates cultural ties during Azores visit
David Burt has paid a visit to the Azores on the invitation of its president, José Manuel Bolieiro.
The Premier, who was accompanied by Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, posted on social media: “Bermuda’s connection with the Azores spans generations.
“The contributions of Bermudians of Azorean descent have played an important role in our island’s history, culture, economy and society.
“This visit follows President Bolieiro’s visit to Bermuda in 2024 and former president Vasco Cordeiro’s in 2019.”
On the first day of the visit, the Premier and minister were welcomed by Paulo Jorge Abraços Estevão, the Regional Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs and Communities.
That afternoon, they joined an official audience with President Bolieiro, where Mr Burt signed the Book of Honour and exchanged gifts, recognising the longstanding ties between Bermuda and the Azores.
Later, the President and the Bermuda delegation toured Terra Nostra Park and visited historic sites in Furnas.
They visited the island’s geothermal energy facilities, learning more about the “innovative” ways the Azores harness their natural resources.
