Andy Burnham has today become the new prime minister of Britain, replacing Sir Keir Starmer.

In a statement from the Cabinet Office, the Government congratulated Mr Burnham on his appointment.

The statement said: “Bermuda values its longstanding and historic relationship with the UK and looks forward to continuing constructive engagement with the new administration on issues of mutual interest, including economic development, security, climate resilience and the advancement of opportunities for the people of Bermuda.

“The Government also looks forward to working closely with Prime Minister Burnham and the new foreign secretary, Ed Miliband, to further strengthen the partnership between Bermuda and the United Kingdom in the years ahead.”

Mr Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, was elected unopposed as the leader of the Labour Party on July 17 after Sir Keir announced his resignation in the face of growing pressure to hand over to a new leader.

In his first speech from Downing Street, Mr Burnham said he would work to end rough sleeping in Britain, and promised a ten-year plan for the country and to tackle the cost of living.
