A date for the ruling Progressive Labour Party’s annual conference remains to be set, but constitutionally the gathering to decide its next leader could come as late as January.

On Tuesday evening, the PLP central committee held a private meeting at the Reginald A Burrows Building on Court Street to deliberate on a conference date.

The PLP annual general conference ordinarily falls between October and November 15, but can be postponed by a resolution of the central committee.

However, the next date would have to come within 15 months of the immediately preceding meeting of its kind.

The PLP’s 60th annual general conference opened on October 22, 2025.

Party sources indicated that a vote to select the date could be held next week.

An annual general conference was not said to be likely in the coming weeks, as party officials review the outcome of a civil ruling handed down by the Supreme Court last Friday after a dispute concerning processes around its leadership election.

The case was brought in September by Curtis Dickinson, the former finance minister, who is a contender with Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, to succeed David Burt as the party leader and thus Premier of Bermuda.

Mr Dickinson had secured an interim injunction against party officials after challenging changes to the party membership selection procedure that he maintained ran counter to the PLP constitution.

Dawn Simmons, the PLP chairwoman, said on Tuesday that the judgment, issued by Puisne Judge Shade Subair Williams, was being reviewed by party counsel.

Under the terms of the ruling, party officials are obliged to serve a list of PLP members to the lawyers for the plaintiffs by November 13.

The PLP has been asked for comment.
