Interns get a taste of insurance

Learning experience: BFIS Bermuda interns (from left) Jennifer Medeiros (St John’s – RM and Insurance), Ebony Brockington (Temple – Business Management), Teniko Eve (St John’s – Business and RM), Michael Coles (Northeastern – Finance and Insurance) and visiting Katie School students, Scott Adams (Insurance and Finance) and Allen Kus (Insurance and Marketing)

Six insurance-focued undergraduates started the three-week Intro-to-Insurance Summer Intern Programme run by the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) on Monday. The programme, now in its 10th year, is run in partnership with the Katie School of Insurance and Finance at Illinois State University and has a comprehensive syllabus covering all aspects of the insurance market from the regulations governing company formations to work-shadowing underwriters. Four Bermudians and two American students from the Katie School will be visiting 31 different insurance and reinsurance companies and related organisations over the course of the internship. To start off this year’s programme the students met with BFIS president and chairman Michael Fisher, and one of the 2007 Bermuda interns, Brian Steinhoff, to talk about how to get the most out of the programme. Mr Fisher noted that none of this would be possible without the tremendous support of the industry whose members will be generously donating time to share their knowledge, insights and experience with the students.Allied World Assurance Company, a long-time BFIS donor and supporter, has for the second year agreed to underwrite the costs of the 2011 programmes, which take place not only in Bermuda but also in London (May 30 to June 10) and Chicago (July 10-23).
