A group of Bermudian university students who got a taste of the insurance industry this summer say the experience was invaluable. The 12 students, who are majoring in everything from actuarial science and risk management to geography and zoology, were selected by the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) to get an introduction to insurance as interns in the industry. The interns spent two to three weeks in three different cities — Hamilton, Chicago and Atlanta — learning the ropes of the re/insurance industry. The programmed wrapped up last week with a presentation from the students to 50 insurance industry professionals where the interns spoke enthusiastically about their experiences.Whichever insurance hub they were in, they said they all gained hugely from it and found that no matter what they’re studying, they are all credible candidates for careers in insurance.BFIS executive director Cathy Lapsley congratulated the students on a job well done and acknowledged the importance of the support from the industry through the donation of time and knowledge.“Donations come in many forms and BFIS very much appreciates companies embracing this programme which gives so much to our students.”Sixty-five students have now taken part in the BFIS internship programmes in London, Bermuda, Chicago and Atlanta. The event was sponsored by the XL Foundation and was held at O’Hara House. The 2012 internship programme was underwritten by Allied World Insurance.
