Read what CEOs had to say in roundtable discussion

The Bermuda Insurance Journal: Free with Hamilton-area papers tomorrow

Three insurance bosses caused a stir when they spoke frankly about their views on doing business in Bermuda in excerpts from a roundtable discussion published last month in this newspaper. That was only the beginning. In the latest edition of the Bermuda Insurance Journal, out on Hamilton-area news-stands tomorrow, the magazine features the entire contents of a rare and very candid conversation involving XL Group’s Mike McGavick, Endurance Specialty Holdings’ David Cash and Hiscox Bermuda’s Charles Dupplin, who has since moved back to the UK.In an hour-long meeting, the trio spoke openly about Bermuda’s past and future challenges and the industry’s relationship with Government. In early July, The Royal Gazette published excerpts from the CEO roundtable in which the insurance CEOs said that the payroll tax increase of two years ago - later rolled back - caused Bermuda jobs to be lost and a “rupture of trust” between Government and the industry. They added that there had been a lag in the impact of the global financial crisis of 2008 on the Bermuda economy, a time in which Mr McGavick believed there was an “overconfidence”, a feeling that the Island would somehow be immune to the downturn.“I think there was a late recognition here that the Bermuda Government was going to need to think harder about how to make Bermuda relatively more attractive in order to retain more of the activities of these companies,” Mr McGavick said. “That delayed reaction has been costly.”The roundtable discussion also covered their view on Bermuda’s pursuit of Solvency II equivalence, insurance market conditions, and the proliferation of cat bonds and sidecars. Also, in this issue the Bermuda Insurance Journal covers the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, the $15.5 billion dollar event that gave birth to Bermuda’s property catastrophe reinsurance industry. At a time when Hurricane Isaac is wreaking havoc across the US Gulf states, the industry is prepared for the damage, precisely because of lessons learned from Andrew.Bermuda Insurance Journal is out in Hamilton-area Royal Gazette newspapers tomorrow.
