South America focus to feature at Bermuda Captive Conference

The ninth annual Bermuda Captive Conference is gearing up to be a one-stop shop for risk managers, showcasing the Island’s significant re/insurance offerings along with its captive capabilities. The conference, to be held in June, will also focus on a new emerging market for the local captive industry: South America.Coming off a record-setting conference last year, which saw more than 600 attendees, this year the BCC is looking to differentiate the Bermuda market from other captive jurisdictions around the world.“The team of organisers for the BCC has been active in building the best possible event to educate, inspire and uplift delegates,” said Peter Willitts, chairman of the event.Chairman of the Bermuda Insurance Development Council (IDC), Allison Towlson added that while there are a number of factors that separate Bermuda as a captive domicile from other jurisdictions, one will be widely evident this year.“Bermuda is the largest captive domicile by number of captives, and importantly by premium, and many business leaders are acutely aware that Bermuda has more captive expertise than elsewhere — with more qualified professionals serving the sector who understand the captive insurance and buyers’ needs,” she said. “What is significantly different about the conference this year, is that BCC delegates will also find more access to insurers and reinsurers who provide a myriad of products designed to meet commercial insurance and reinsurance needs.”The conference will also feature three sessions focusing on captive opportunities for South American corporations. All of these sessions will be held entirely in Spanish — a first for the conference. Simultaneous English translation headphones will be available for those who do not speak Spanish. The sessions will include information on the benefits of forming a captive, why its advantageous to do so in Bermuda and also include current clients from South America discussing why they set up on the Island.“We don’t know of any English industry conference has done that before and that is quite exciting because we think South America is the market to focus on,” said Mr Willitts. There has been an influx of interest from Colombia, added Mr Willitts, who thinks this will be a market that will become “fairly substantial”. The captive industry here is also excited about opportunities in Mexico. The industries in these areas varies widely and are the larger international corporations in the region. The conference offers between 20 and 30 sessions and Peter Zaffino, president and CEO of March Inc, will be the featured industry speaker this year. The main round-table discussion will include industry heavy-hitters including CEO of re/insurer Catlin Group, Stephen Catlin; CEO of the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), Jeremy Cox and president of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR), Brad Kading. The event will be held from June 10-12, 2013 at the Fairmont Southampton Resort and Hotel. Organisers are advising early bookings for the conference — April 1 for early registration and for the hotel — March 1 for early bird rates. For more information visit www.bermudacaptive.bm.
