Insurance veteran Spencer-Arscott to receive BII Lifetime Achievement Award
Robin Spencer-Arscott has been hailed as a “true ambassador for Bermuda” as he was named winner of the Bermuda Insurance Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Bermudian Mr Spencer-Arscott has been heavily involved in organising the Bermuda Reception at the annual Monte Carlo Rendezvous, as well as the World Insurance Forum and was chairman of the Bermuda RIMS committee for many years.
The BII also named two other award recipients to be honoured at an awards ceremony at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on May 15.
Julia Henderson, of Brit Insurance, a senior vice-president, building the firm’s Property Treaty portfolio in its new Bermuda office, will receive the Young Industry Leader of the Year Award.
The BII has also named Catlin Insurance Company Ltd as the winner of the Corporate Social Responsibility Award.
Mr Spencer-Arscott has enjoyed a 50-year career in the Bermuda re/insurance industry.
He graduated from High School at Warwick Academy in 1960 and joined American International as an underwriting trainee. From 1973 to 1980 he was with JH Blades & Co as vice-president and general manager.
“Robin has played an important role in promoting Bermuda overseas, particularly in the London and US markets,” the BII stated.
In his work on the Monte Carlo and World Insurance Forum events, the BII mentioned the help of his Whitfield Group partner, Suzie Pewter.
“As a result of his service, Robin has been called a true ambassador for Bermuda. Robin has held many roles during his long career: a number of them at the CEO level.
“Robin was President and CEO of Frank B Hall (Bermuda) Ltd from 1980—1988. He was also chairman and CEO of Rollins Burdick Hunter (Bermuda) Ltd from 1988—1997. This company is now known as Aon (Bermuda).
“From 1998-2003, Robin was president and CEO of RSA Services Ltd an insurance consultancy company. Robin is currently deputy chairman and director of AAA Risk Solutions Ltd, an energy broking company which is now in its 11th year of operation.”
Ms Henderson started her career in operations at RenaissanceRe in the Ventures unit before becoming a catastrophe analyst. She took a sabbatical to earn an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
She then moved to PartnerRe as an underwriter, and was later promoted to vice-president and senior underwriter.
Ms Henderson, now of Brit Insurance, is a member of industry-related organisations such as Women in Reinsurance (Wire), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU), and the Bermuda Independent Underwriters Association (BIUA).
She holds a CPCU designation and an Associate in Reinsurance designation. She has also taught CPCU courses at the Bermuda Insurance Institute. She is a wife and mother of two small children and she volunteers at the SPCA.
Catlin was honoured for it community work. Catlin is the title sponsor of the Island’s largest fundraising event, the Catlin End to End. Last year this event raised over $250,000.
The firm has for several years supported important climate related initiatives, starting with the Catlin Arctic Survey, followed by the Catlin Seaview Survey, a programme developed with Google and the University of Queensland that set out to map and explore the health of the world’s coral reef systems. The Seaview Survey team visited Bermuda in 2013. The Company’s “Kids on the Reef” programme provided Bermudian children with the opportunity to explore the Island’s off shore reefs In 2013, Catlin donated $1 million to the Bermuda Hospital Charitable Trust, and in addition, provided grants to many local charities to support initiatives related to youth, education, the environment, health, and family.
