Students learn about life insurance sector

Ten students from Berkeley Institute learnt about career opportunities in the life re/insurance sector at a lunch and learn session organised by Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers.The organisation said that Scott Selkirk, of Somerset Re, explained the role that life re/insurance plays in the global economy and the work carried out by Biltir, which represents 61 long-term insurance, reinsurance and servicing companies in Bermuda who provide life and annuity products,Paolo Fiandesio, also of Somerset Re, told attendees at the offices of Global Atlantic Re in Hamilton about the role of risk management in business, while Kiara Somner of Global Atlantic Re gave insights into operational management. Scott Silverman of Prosperity talked about some of the legal aspects of the industry, and Sheetal Chhiba of EY explained the role that actuarial scientists play in the re/insurance industry.Ronnie Klein, executive director of Biltir, said: “The lunch and learn series is just one of the many popular community service programmes that Biltir members support. Our goal is to provide a pipeline of new local talent to feed the long-term sectors growing business in Bermuda.” In January, Biltir invited students to apply for a 10-week, paid-for summer internship with a Biltir company. Students can apply for the programme through the Biltir website at www.biltir.bm. At the end of 2018, assets managed by the long-term industry in Bermuda reached nearly $500 billion, a large majority of them managed by Biltir members, the organisation said. Biltir companies employ 540 people on-island.
