How insurers use technology to handle claims and how Bermuda develops the people who will make those decisions will be in focus when Future Claims Bermuda returns on Monday.

The half-day event, hosted by claims technology provider Docosoft in partnership with the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies, will bring claims professionals together with students, career changers and people in the early stages of their careers.

Now in its second year, the event will also cover emerging risks and the role of claims teams in shaping insurers’ strategy.

Kim Wilkerson, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, will deliver the opening remarks at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. Registration opens at 1pm and the programme begins at 1.30pm.

David Parker, head of business development at the Bermuda Business Development Agency, will moderate the opening panel on how technology can support claims professionals. He will be joined by Tiffany Austin of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, Jonathan Mulvihill of Ascot, and Aidan O’Neill, founder and chief executive of Docosoft.

“While innovation continues to transform the claims function, it remains a profession built on expertise, judgment and commitment to serving policyholders when they need support most,” Mr O’Neill said.

Ben Bolton of London-based Gracechurch will give a presentation ahead of a panel on the claims function as a strategic asset. Meg Green, senior editor of Insurance Insider, will moderate the discussion with Mike Merlo of Aon and Rishi Aggarwal of Convex. Adam Fleischer and John Groome will give a keynote on the future of public nuisance.

In the afternoon’s Bermuda Shorts sessions, Tom Johansmeyer, global head of index classes at Price Forbes Re, will discuss emerging geopolitical risks. Lorene Phillips, founder of Clarendon Wallace, will speak with Sophia Smethurst and Kamikko Ingham about what a claims professional does day to day.

Victoria Cunningham, executive director of BFIS, will lead the final panel on the skills future claims professionals will need and how those considering a career in the field can prepare.

The organisers will present cheques to last year’s winners of the BFIS Docosoft Claims Award before closing remarks from John Huff, chief executive of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers.

The award helps Bermudian students, early-career professionals and career changers pay for relevant university studies or professional qualifications, including the Associate in Claims designation offered by The Institutes.

Ms Cunningham said Docosoft had also hosted BFIS interns in London. She added: “These events connect students and young professionals directly with the people and technology shaping claims — exposure that can turn an interest into a career.”
