Sompo International has appointed Alessandrea Quane as chief executive of its international markets business, subject to regulatory approval.

Ms Quane, who takes up the role immediately, will report directly to James Shea, CEO of Sompo Property and Casualty. She will oversee the company’s commercial and consumer insurance operations outside North America and Japan, including Britain, Continental Europe, Brazil and Asia Pacific.

Ms Quane has more than 30 years’ experience in the insurance sector, having lived and worked in the United States, Britain, Germany and France. She began her career as an actuary and has held senior roles including global corporate chief actuary and chief risk officer. Most recently, she was CEO at Oscar Health, the American healthcare insurer, and also served as an independent director on the board of Axa XL Bermuda Ltd.

Sompo International Holdings Ltd, based in Bermuda, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sompo Holdings Inc, headquarted in Tokyo. In August, the company said it would pay $3.5 billion to buy Bermudian-based Aspen Holdings Ltd.
