Guy Carpenter rebrands as Marsh Re
More than a century after acquiring Guy Carpenter, Marsh & McLennan has rebranded its reinsurance, capital advisory and quantitative analytics arm, to Marsh Re.
A note from Dean Klisura, president and CEO of Marsh Re, commented: “As Marsh Re, we are entering a new chapter that enhances how we serve clients in an increasingly complex risk environment.
“With the full strength of Marsh, we bring expanded capabilities, deeper collaboration, and broader access to solutions across risk, reinsurance and capital, people and investments, and management consulting — helping clients navigate complex challenges with clarity and confidence.”
“For more than 100 years,” the statement reads, “Guy Carpenter has been a leading risk and reinsurance specialist.
“As Marsh Re, our commitment to exceptional service, our talented team, and our trusted advice remains unchanged, and we will continue building on that legacy with the full strength of Marsh and our colleagues across the organisation.”
Guy Carpenter has been in Bermuda since 1960, with a Marsh Re timeline showing how the company anticipated a large liability capacity shortage in the US at the time, and led the formation of Terra Nova Insurance Company in both Bermuda and London.
The company wrote in the timeline: “This milestone foretold the central role Guy Carpenter would play in creating and expanding the Bermuda marketplace in the decades to come.”
Guy Carpenter met Henry Marsh and Donald McLennan just by chance on a cross-Atlantic voyage to Europe in 1923. It was only a short time later that Marsh & McLennan acquired Carpenter’s firm and his statistical expertise, marking Marsh & McLennan’s first major acquisition.
The company said: “This critical move established the precise London-to-Bermuda specialty bridge that laid the baseline infrastructure for Bermuda to eventually morph into the global property catastrophe reinsurance capital it is today.”
The Marsh Re timeline, 1922-2022 100 Years of Putting Clients and Colleagues First, outlines a significant role in the development of the Bermuda market.
The firm’s assistance in establishing Terra Nova planted the “seeds for its later central role in expanding the Bermuda insurance market”.
Guy Carpenter plays a foundational and dominant role in the contemporary Bermuda reinsurance marketplace, serving as a major hub for complex property catastrophe, retrocession, casualty, and specialty lines risk placement.
Operating from its local headquarters at 106 Pitts Bay Road in Hamilton, the firm functions as one of the island's primary conduits connecting global insurance capital with sophisticated risk-transfer mechanisms.
