Churchgoing low in Britain

LONDON (Reuters) — More than half of Britain’s population describes themselves as Christian, but only one in ten goes to church each week, according to a survey published on Tuesday.A poll of 7,000 adults for the Christian charity Tearfund found women and older people are more likely to go to church than men and the young.

People in Northern Ireland are the most regular churchgoers, with nearly a third attending at least once a week.

The Rev. Lynda Barley, the Church of England’s head of research and statistics, said there had been a growth in “pick and mix” spirituality that often doesn’t involve organised religion.

“Most people today see themselves as ‘spiritual’ rather than in any sense ‘religious’,” she wrote in a report.
