Bermudians to help build homes in Bolivia
A group of 18 Bermudians spearheaded by Christ Church of Scotland, Warwick, who share the common goal of eradicating sub-standard housing, will take up the challenge in Bolivia, South America, in the next few weeks.
The team is comprised of 11 adults and seven students from all walks of life. Also in the group are three members of De Boys Day Out Club of Bermuda.
The group will arrive in the province of Cochabamba in the south-east of the capital La Paz, the birthplace of the Habitat for Humanity programme in Bolivia on November 1. There they will spend ten days helping to build several brick and cement homes.
Bolivia was chosen because it represents a country with incredible need. Even by South American standards it is poor with over 70 percent of its population living below the poverty line.
The local community has been generous in helping to support the $5,00 cost of sending a team to Bolivia. A substantial portion of the costs have also been borne by the individuals going.
The church group is looking for additional sponsorship for several students participating this year who cannot afford to pay their full cost. Out of the total costs, about $8,000 goes to Habitat to purchase materials.
Last year, under the auspices of Christ Church Scotland, 18 students and adults built a home on Bozeman, Montana for a family of six. A student from that trip, Robyn DeSilva, summed up her experience: "My trip was awesome. I loved it! It was such a great experience to get to see a part of the world that you might not see. Habitat is great and you get to do something worthwhile while you are there. It was much fun and to be able to say I helped build a house last summer is great too! I hope that anyone that can go, will. It's such a great time!"
