Church takes it to the Southside streets
The streets of Southside are set to come alive this weekend with the second annual ?Taking It To The Streets? celebration, hosted by New Testament Church of God Glory Temple.
According to Pastor Blanche Burchall, of Glory Temple: ?It was birthed through me last year, before I was a pastor. It was birthed out of our love for Bermuda.?
Pastor Burchall, who served as an evangelist, saw the event as a way to share her church?s faith and love with the community, offering a glimmer of hope, particularly to those less fortunate.
?It?s a time when we can just come together,? she explained.
While the street festival will be held on today and Sunday, the first event for the weekend was held last night when Dr. Bernice King, daughter of slain pastor and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who shared with clergy, ministers and teachers during a ministerial symposium and question and answer period.
Dr. King ministers out of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia under Bishop Eddie L. Long.
Dr. King will also be speaking today at 4 p.m. and tomorrow at 4.30 p.m. during the ?Dress-Down Youth Rally? at Glory Temple.
In addition to the special messages by Dr. Bernice King, there will also be face painting, clowns, bouncy castles and music ministry, beginning at noon, today and tomorrow.
There will also be health screenings and offerings of free groceries and clothing for needy families.
?It?s an opportunity for people to fellowship and enjoy the ministries there,? Pastor Burchall added.
She hopes that it will be a welcoming event for people who would not normally attend a church-related function.
?There is a lot more to the church. The church is a lot more to offer than preaching,? she said. ?We want to share the love of Christ.?
All are welcome. Festivities end at 7 p.m. each evening. The event is sponsored, in part, by the Bermuda Department of Tourism.
