Former St. Joseph?s priest, Fr. David Doran passes

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton in Bermuda announces the death of Rev. David Doran, C.R., in Louisville, Kentucky.

Fr. Dave was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1925, the son of the late John and Marian (Higdon) Doran. He professed temporary vows in the Congregation of the Resurrection in 1947 and perpetual vows in 1950. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest on June 28, 1953.

After ordination, Fr. Dave began his ministry at St. Louis Parish, Waterloo and later served at St. Mary?s Parish, Kitchener, St. Pius Parish, Brantford, in Canada, and the Resurrection Parish, in Louisville, Kentucky.

In 1974 he returned to St. Mary?s Parish as Pastor. Whilst in Canada Fr. Dave served as Chaplain for the Militia in Kitchener and Brantford.

In 1981, Fr. Dave came to Bermuda and was named Rector of the Cathedral of St. Theresa in Hamilton, Bermuda.

He moved to St. Joseph?s Church in Somerset in 1990 and served there as Pastor for the remainder of his time in Bermuda. During his time at St. Joseph?s Parish, he was also chaplain for the Canadian Forces until their withdrawal.

At St. Joseph?s he continued to serve his parishioners and his God well until his failing health caused him to retire and eventually leave Bermuda in early 2004.

Fr. David was a very humble man who never fully realised his greatness and the effect he had on many of the people he ministered to.

He was a compassionate man filled with love for his fellow humans, especially the poor and marginalised.

In Canada he arranged to house and feed Vietnamese refugees coming into the Kitchener area in the 1970s.

In Bermuda, in addition to his regular duties as Pastor of St. Joseph?s Parish he was chaplain for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Roman Catholic charity in Bermuda and Chaplain for the Prisons.

He was extremely well-loved by all he ministered to and he had a special place in his heart for the little children. Our Diocese was blessed to have had him for such a long time.

He truly loved Bermuda and had no desire to leave. He is sadly missed by everyone he has left behind. We take comfort in knowing that he is resting in his rightful place with his Almighty Saviour whom he loved above all things.

Fr. Dave is survived by a sister, Marian McCune of Louisville, and a brother, John Doran, of California, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Guardian Angels Church, Louisville, on Thursday, November 24. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Guardian Angels Church on Friday, November 25 at 10 a.m., with Fr. Paul S. Voisin, C.R., Provincial Superior, presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Kentucky.

In Bermuda there will be a Mass celebrated for Fr. David Doran on Monday at St. Joseph?s Parish at 7.30 p.m.

Everyone is welcomed to St. Joseph?s Church to celebrate this Memorial Mass for the life of our beloved Fr. David.
