Frederick Smith Ryan died peacefully at his home in Ithaca, on May 9, 2003. He was 93. Born in Cumberland RI on October 9, 1909, the son of Michael Patrick Ryan and Ellen Butler, Fred married Mary Carol Kennedy in 1940. Carol predeceased him in 2001. Fred and Carol lived in Montreal Quebec for many years where he worked for Zeller's Limited, retiring in 1972 after 40 years of service. Fred moved to Ithaca with his wife in 2000, after enjoying many years of retirement in Toronto and Dunedin, Fl. Fred was a loving, gentle and generous man and inspired others to be likewise. He was active in numerous community organisations during his years in Montreal. He loved music and was a longtime member of the Montreal chorus of SEBSOSA. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Order of Alhambra.

Fred was predeceased by his daughter, Janice Ryan Beach, in 1998. He is survived by his son Fred M. Ryan and daughter-in-law Tommie Ryan of Hamilton Bermuda; Peggy Ryan William and son-in-law David Williams of Ithaca NY; son-in-law Richard Beach and his wife Barbara Whalen of Montreal, Quebec; five grandchildren: Tim Ryan and his wife Stacey Petriuk of Calgary Alberta; Jacqueline Ryan of Toronto Ontario; Kennedy Ryan of Whistler BC; Kathryan Beach-Verhey and her husband Timothy of Davidson NC; and Michael Beach of Washington DC; a great grandson Ryan Timothy Beach-Verhey; his sister-in-law Helen Smallhorn of Montreal; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a private service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Janice Ryan Endowment Fund, SUNY College at Plattsburg, 101 Broad St. Plattsburg, NY 1290 or the Annual Fund for Ithaca College, c/o Ithaca College, c/o Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY 14850.
