Island Muslims open the doors
Members of the Muslim community were pleased that they had the opportunity to participate in an open discussion with the Emanuel Methodist Church last month.
"There were a lot of questions asked about the rights of Islamic women," Imam Basim Muwakkil said of the crowd of around 25 people who attended. "People were surprised with our beliefs as well as our similarities and varied differences.
Mr. Muwakkil said a panel of Muslims presented different topics to the Emanuel Methodist congregation, including principles such as believing in all prophets, honouring and respecting Jesus and God being the redeemer.
"We also tried to dispel the myth that Muslims are devils," he said.
While Mr. Muwakkil thanked Reverend Graeme Currath for hosting the open forum, he said he hoped other faiths would follow suit in the future.
"In order for a degree of tolerance to take place, we have to break down barriers and create understanding."
And although he said there were not going to be any special ceremonies on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, he encouraged the community to pray as Muslims in the United States and Bermuda were going to observe the day in that manner.
