Long time KEMH matron dies at 96
Word has been received of the death of Bernice Charlotte Underhill R.N., of Blackville, New Brunswick on May 22, 2003. Funeral services were held at Trinity Anglican Church, Blackville on Thursday, May 29.
Miss Underhill was a graduate of Montreal General Hospital and having done post-graduate studies at McGill University she joined the staff of the King Edward VII Hospital on October 8, 1938.
A well qualified and experienced nurse, she was appointed to the position of supervisor of the school for nurses, filling this position, according to the first arrival report after her appointment “with knowledge and zeal”.
Later, being awarded the Dudley C. Trott Scholarship, she did further post-graduate studies at Vanderbilt University. Following which in 1947, she became Matron (Director of Nurses) of KEMH, which position she filled until her retirement in the early 1960s.
Returning to Canada she filled a number of position in Montreal General Hospital and places in the Caribbean under the supervision of Canada.
Born on August 2, 1906, she lived a long and useful life. In recognition of this and the contribution to Blackville by her family, the congregation of Trinity Church, organised a beautiful funeral with full choir etc.
She is survived by her sister, a cousin as well as many nieces and nephews. Her many friends in Bermuda will remember Bernice C. Underhill with much affection.
