Methodists celebrate men's roles

To celebrate their first 'Men's Day Programme', Marsden Methodist Church is kicking off a series of month long events that focus on the responsibility and role of males in our community.

Marsden has also enlisted Rev. Leathon "Buck" Magee, the pastor of St. John Baptist Church in Mansfield, Louisiana, (USA), to be the guest preacher for the Men's Day Programme taking place on June 24, at 9 a.m. and again at 4 p.m.

A charismatic speaker, Rev. Magee has participated on many boards and agencies, worked as project director for Community Partnership for a drug free Shreveport, and most recently served as a consultant to the National Baptist Convention of America.

"This Men's day event is particularly important as we recognise the positive contribution from the men in our congregation and reach out to the men in our community," said Rev. Joseph Whalen Jr., Pastor of Marsden.

He continued: "It is also a very important time for us as we seek to become affiliated with the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church (USA). "

The Rev. Dr. Felton Edwin May, the resident bishop for that area, will be on the Island to share in the Consecration Service of the Talbot School on June 14, at 7 p.m. The Talbot School was just recently acquired by the Trustees of Marsden Church and this special event will be solemnised by an unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Bishop May and Madam Premier Jennifer Smith." In addition, the men of Marsden are sponsoring a Pre-fathers day cod fish and potatoes breakfast on Saturday June 16 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at their fellowship Hall. On June 21 at 7 p.m., men are invited to "The Tender and Keeper of the Garden", a Financial Planning Seminar from a Christian perspective.

Dedicated on October 1923, Marsden Methodist Church was named after the second assigned Methodist missionary to Bermuda, Rev. Joshua Marsden.

However, its roots began much earlier in 1748 when Methodist preacher, Rev. George Whitefield gave a sermon in Tucker's Town, which was a community settled almost entirely by people of colour. Today, Marsden is a small but dynamic multicultural congregation that welcomed its first black Methodist Minister, Rev. Joseph F. Whalen Jr. on September 1, 1999.
