Mt. Zion?s test of faith

The best biblical brains of Mt. Zion AME Church will go head to head tonight when the final of the church?s Christian Faith Competition takes place at the Fairmont Southampton Resort.

Competition chairman Tony Roberts said organisers are anticipating a close contest with the four finalists all looking strong.

Defending champions the Golden Girls look to be the favourites as they won their semi-final with 185 points on Thursday night, easing past last year?s runners-up Mighty Men of Valour who scored 160 points.

The other semi-final on Tuesday night was a nail-biter as Grace and Mercy tied with Zion?s Lions with scores of 135 each. Because the top two teams in each semi-final automatically qualified for tonight?s final, there was no need for a play-off.

The two teams failing to make tonight?s finals were Mr. Zion Eagles, who scored 105 points on Tuesday and Angelicos, a youth team, who were tied for the lead at half-time on Thursday but struggled with the current events segment of the competition to end up with 115 points.

?This makes for an exciting final as all the teams are extremely close,? said Mr. Roberts, who explained that the teams will be required to answer five rounds of questions on the Old Testament, the New Testament, doctrine and discipline of the AME church, trivia and current events.

Mr. Roberts said this year?s competition has proven to be a family affair. A father and son, Leroy Gordon and Jared Gordon, will be facing off for Grace and Mercy and Zion?s Lions respectively.

?The camaraderie is really showing through among team members as people who might otherwise only see each other on Sundays have been getting together through the week to prepare for the competition.?

The final is tonight at Fairmont Southampton Resort?s Poinciana Room, starting promptly at 7.30 p.m.
