Obituary: Joy Rosemary Hartley
Joy Rosemary Hartley, of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, died peacefully in her sleep on St. John the Baptist Day, June 24, following a long illness.
Joy and her late husband, Canon Peter Hartley arrived in Bermuda in March 1976 when Peter was installed as Canon Residentiary of the Bermuda Cathedral. They remained in Bermuda until the Canon's retirement in May 1985.
During their nine years in Bermuda, Joy was active in the Cathedral and the community. She was a faithful member of the Cathedral Choir, the Mothers Union, the Guild of the Good Shepherd the Needlepoint Guild and the Brass Cleaners Guild.
She also sang alto with the Bermuda Philharmonic Chorus under the direction of the late Roy Ricketts and was a member of the Inner Wheel Club (Rotary).
Upon her return to the UK, she became a member of the Clarkson Singers in Wisbech and also joined the Probus Club. She enjoyed visits from her family including her four grandchildren.
She was always happy to welcome Bermudian travellers to her home that was filled with memorabilia from their Bermuda years. Indeed, the sign at the front door read "Bermuda".
She kept a beautiful garden that was visible from her kitchen window and it gave her and the neighbours no end of pleasure.
Her funeral service was held at the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech on St. Peter's Day, June 29.
Joy is survived by her daughter Rosemary and son-in-law Peter, granddaughters, Victoria and Emma and her son Christopher, daughter-in-law Mary, grandchildren Peter and Anna and also her sister Pat Webb.
"Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace."
