It is a highly unusual sight ? two Hasidic Jewish rabbis driving around on a rental scooter.

Rabbis Yosef Zaklos and Mendy Lesker arrived in Bermuda on Monday for a nine-day visit to help encourage the local Jewish community and have already been spotted numerous times riding around the island on their scooter.

The pair are a part of a special visitation programme of the Chabad Lubavitch organisation, whose goal is to minister to Jews around the world, making special efforts to visit communities that do not have a local rabbi.

?We are trying to bring happy regards from Judaism abroad,? said Rabbi Zaklos. ?There are people on the other end that care about what?s going on here. Our visit isn?t limited to specific things.?

In fact, the pair are ready and willing to meet with anyone who wishes to talk with them or needs the services of a rabbi. In just a few days, they have already had the opportunity to talk with people just passing on the street.

?We met a man off of one of the cruise ships,? said Rabbi Zaklos. The gentleman noticed the pair were carrying the Tefillin, and there, on the street, they shared in prayer with the man. The Tefillin are small boxes containing Torah passages with black, leather straps that are worn on the forehead and left arm for prayer.

?We hope to be a small light that pushes away a lot of darkness,? explained Rabbi Lesker.

The pair, who are on the Island until Tuesday, also carry a quantity of Mezuzot for those in need as a special outreach of the Chabad Lubavitch. The Mezuzah is attached to the doorpost of Jewish homes and businesses and contains a scroll with passages from Deuteronomy (6:4-9 and 11:13-21).

The Chabad Lubavitch has 4,000 emissaries around the world and the ministry is a part of the legacy of renowned Jewish leader, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who died in 1994.

Rabbis Zaklos and Lesker have both travelled widely as a part of the programme, with Rabbi Lesker spending much of his time in the Caribbean and Rabbi Zaklos being selected to travel to Phuket, Thailand after the Tsunami disaster.

In addition to meeting individual needs, the pair held Shabbat with the Jewish Community of Bermuda. Shabbat is the meal taken before the start of the Sabbath.
