?Uncle Virgil? ? an example to us all
Virgil was born on March 16th, 1920 in St. Miguel in the Azores and came to Bermuda with his parents at the age of six, together with three brothers and one sister.
He grew up on a farm and attended Warwick Academy. His first job was at Horizons where he worked in maintenance.
In 1939 Virgil joined the B.V.R.C. at the beginning of World War ll. They camped in tents on the grounds of what is today the Warwick Camp. He served his country for six years in various parts of the Island. At the end of the war Virgil stayed on with the B.V.R.C. as a musician playing the Cornett and Trumpet in the band under the direction of Bandmaster Sam Pye.
Virgil then went to work at the US Naval Operating Base at Rockaway as a Warehousemen in the Supply & Fiscal Department from November 1945 until 1950.
He then went to work at the Castle Harbour Hotel as a Night Security Officer.
In 1951 he joined the Bermuda Electric Light Company as a Salesman in the Appliance Department where he was employed for 22 years until BELCO closed their showrooms in 1973. The business was then taken over by Philips House and he worked there for a period of one year.
He then joined H. A. & E Smith where he was employed in the Men?s Department for many years. Virgil enjoyed his years working at ?Smith?s? meeting many people ? some famous ? others regular folks and he was known for the efficient and caring manner in which he serviced customers. He retired from ?Smith?s? in his 70?s.
After retiring Virgil continued to live a very active and independent life. He had many, many friends.
Virgil was very active in his church ? Calvary Gospel Chapel ? and for 20 years was Treasurer. He was know for his kindness and helping others and was particularly interested in the youth at his church who all referred to him as ?Uncle Virgil?. He loved his church and was a very faithful member until his illness.
He will be remembered fondly by his church family and especially his family.
He was the second oldest of 9 children. Virgil will always be in our hearts. A loving, caring, brother who always set a good example for living.
