A hall of fame fisherwoman

Friends of Gene H. DuVal will be saddened to learn of her untimely death in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday, October 14, 2007.

Gene is best known in Bermuda by members and friends of the Bermuda Anglers Club and other fishing clubs on the Island. She and her husband Bill participated in 23 Bermuda Anglers Club International Light Tackle Tournaments, catching several world records in Bermuda waters. She was well known and highly respected in international fishing circles and was the recipient of the International Women's Fishing Association Hall of Fame Award.

She was the first woman to receive an Outstanding Achievement Award from the International Game Fish Association, and she held 139 world records, the most by a woman and an achievement bettered by only two others.

Gene's vibrant personality, contagious laugh, positive approach to life, and sincere concern for others endeared her to the many people whose lives she touched so profoundly.

She is survived by her husband Bill DuVal, her children Rene DuVal-Funk, Debbie Du-Val-Blankenship, and John DuVal, together with their spouses and many other family members.

A Memorial Church Service and a Celebration of Gene's Life was held on Friday, October 19 in Richmond, Virginia. Several of Gene and Bill's Bermuda friends attended.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to the IWFA Scholarship Fund (in her name) P. O. Box 21066, Fort Lauderdale, FL. 33335-1066, USA.

This Fund assists students in obtaining degrees in marine sciences.
