Church row reaches critical point
to disclose their next plan of attack.
Two factions of the Grace Methodist Church on North Shore Road, Pembroke, entered a legal fight to control church property after a majority of the parishioners protested an affiliation with the United Church of Canada (UCC).
The parishioners, led by lay minister Willard Lightbourne, objected to the UCC's liberal policies, one of which is the ordaining of homosexuals. After failing to share the premises, the rivals sued and counter-sued each other to gain the right to conduct services exclusively at the Church.
Last week Puisne Judge Norma Wade-Miller ruled in favour of the Lightbourne group and said they had more faithfully adhered to Methodist principles.
But Synod president Ronald Vincent said members of the Synod of the Wesleyan Methodist Church met to discuss the ramifications of the court decision.
