Race stables make way for church

Radnor Road Christian Fellowship, which was auctioning off its small Hamilton Parish building on Friday, hopes to move into what was formerly the racetrack stables by Easter.

The track has not been used for horse racing since 1961.

Mr. Malcolm Sutherland, the project architect at Derek Mitchell and Associates, said the $150,000 renovation project is only the first phase of a much bigger plan.

"They're expanding so quickly that the present facility they occupy is totally inadequate,'' Mr. Sutherland said of the non-denominational Christian group. "What will happen eventually is the stable building will be demolished and something more suitable and substantial will be built.'' The church's plans will likely take shape over the next five years, he said.

The group recently received Development Applications Board approval to convert the stables.
