Hamilton today to mark World Red Cross Day.

Organisers are also running a colouring competition for school students to improve awareness of the dangers of hurricanes.

Local Red Cross volunteers will be holding information and recruitment stalls outside the Bank of Bermuda and on Butterfield Place, Front Street, Washington Mall, and on the porch of the Bermuda Library. As well as recruiting members, organisers will also be selling first aid kits and tickets for the summer dinner/dance.

Meanwhile, the Island's Red Cross has raised $26,000 for the Mozambique flooding appeal, and $9,000 for the Ethiopia Drought Appeal. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent hold the day annually to celebrate the movement's founding in Geneva, Switzerland in 1863.

The organisation's 105 million volunteers and 300,000 employees have offered humanitarian aid to 233 million people around the world.

The aim of International Red Cross Day is to educate the public about the organisation's global strategy.
