Allen temple celebrates 30th birthday

speaker at celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of the Lay Organisation of Allen Temple AME Church in Somerset.

Mrs. Jenkins, a native of Montgomery, Alabama, is the first vice president of the Connectional Lay Organisation of the AME Church.

Lay members of the church will have the opportunity to hear her speak tomorrow when she conducts the sermon.

Among members of the Allen Temple Lay Organisation, which was founded in Bermuda in 1964, are local politician Dr. John Cann and former Allen Temple layman The Rt. Rev. Vinton Anderson, who was the first Bermudian to be elevated to the office of bishop. He is currently president of the Royal Council of Churches based in Geneva.

"We have a long history of motivating people to high office through service to the community,'' said Mrs. Ismay Philip, spokeswoman for Allen Temple.
