Mr. Eldon Trimingham, Chairman of The Centennial Trust Advisory Committee, presented the cheque to The Rt. Rev. William Down, Lord Bishop of Bermuda, and Mr. J. Christopher Astwood, Appeal Chairman, during a ceremony held at the Cathedral on Thursday.

The Centennial Trust has committed $200,000 to the Cathedral, which will be provided in increments of $50,000 annually through to 1995.

The Living Landmark Appeal is raising funds for the 107-year-old structure's restoration, and has received more than $3 million in cash and pledges. A further appeal for donations was launched this week to raise the remaining $1 million needed to complete the task.

Restoration to the Gothic-style cathedral has been progressing rapidly, with work on the intricate stonework and beautiful stained glass windows almost finished.

Mr. Paul Lowry, project manager for the restoration, outlined the work completed so far. The first project, he explained, was fitting the building with new gutters and down-pipes to prevent water overflow damage to the outer walls.

Stonework around the doorways has been re-done down to the last intricate detail, including the statue of Jesus Christ above the west door.

Seventy four of the Cathedral's stained glass windows were carefully removed by the Bermuda Glass Company, and shipped to craftsmen in York, England. There they were disassembled, and painstakingly restored with new lead.

Much work remains to be done, however, primarily on the organ, the Cathedral's sound system and the grounds.
