Church to meet on row over ads
decision which has reportedly created conflict among members.
The Anglican clergy chose to place advertisements in the Bermuda Sun and The Mid Ocean News, but not the Bermuda Times, in addition to The Royal Gazette .
The move follows their majority decision to assume authority in determining the shape, content and form of each parish's church advertisement, the Bermuda Times reported this week.
There is concern by some Anglican ministers and members that the decision does not send the right message to the community.
The Royal Gazette understands one minister felt the church should be the last to behave in a way that could be conceived as discriminatory.
The Bermuda Times reported Canon Arnold Hollis of James Church said in a recent church bulletin that if church advertising was to be expanded, it must be done in all newspapers.
Canon James Francis, who also serves as chairman of the Human Right Commission, declined to be drawn into the controversy, saying a statement would be made after the meeting tomorrow.
"The situation is already out of hand,'' he said.
He added he felt the Bermuda Times story had "not dealt with the real issue''.
