year and people in Bermuda are being urged to help spread a little festive cheer.

The Salvation Army is providing social assistance for low income and needy families on the Island, particularly in the form of food hampers.

Janice Dill, the Salvation Army's community and family services director, is urging people to donate to the appeal, which helps to make Christmas a little bit more special for those in need.

She said: "I expect that we will be assisting in the vicinity of 500 families this Christmas season, some of whom are on social assistance, while others are in low paying jobs where there is not sufficient resources to meet all the needs of the family.'' She said that more than 500 children would be receiving toys and clothing from the Santa Anonymous programme, which is channelled through The Salvation Army's Social Services.

Mrs. Dill added: "The greatest need that we have at this time is not for toys, but rather for underwear, sleepwear, socks and clothing, sizes from one to 12.

"They do not need to be gift wrapped, as that is taken care of at the centre before distribution.'' Major Mandy Dennett, Divisional Secretary for Business Administration at the army's headquarters, as well as the Red Shield Campaign Director, said if people supported the appeal, their efforts would be felt in a number of organisations across the Island.

She said: "It's very important for the people of Bermuda to realise that in supporting the Red Shield Appeal currently underway, they are supporting the distribution of hampers throughout Bermuda, in addition to supporting The Emergency Housing Complex, as well as The Harbour Light Addiction Centre.'' There are a number of agencies, businesses and people who donate both food, toys and clothing to The Salvation Army programme, but members of the public are being encouraged to get on board with the Christmas appeal, too.

Mrs. Dill added: "The recipients of our Christmas hampers will have a complete Christmas dinner, including turkey or poultry, fresh vegetables and fruit, and all the trimmings, and an average hamper would be worth in the vicinity of $80.'' In addition to the Christmas hamper programme, the Salvation Army also organises a special Christmas dinner for the homeless.

This year's dinner for the homeless and lonely will take place at The Hamilton Citadel Auditorium on December 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are complimentary and can be picked up at The Emergency Housing Complex or the Harbour Light Centre.
