Newport choir strikes right chord
Island, shared more than their voices during their week-long visit.
The choir spent time with residents at the Pembroke Rest Home on March 12.
They were on tour throughout the Island from March 11 through 19.
The visit is part of the Spring Break holiday for 29 of the choir's 43 regular members.
St. George's School is an independent Episcopal (Anglican) boarding school of some 325 students, including boys and girls.
The choir, which provides music for services in the school's cathedral -- like chapel, tours annually. Recent tours have included Spain and the Bahamas.
Known to many Bermudians as the starting point of the Newport-Bermuda race, Newport is located on Aquidneck Island, some 60 miles south of Boston. The school's renowned sailing team will be visiting Bermuda next week to prepare for the coming season.
Though they had hoped for warmer weather, the group enjoyed the warm Bermuda welcome they received.
"The hospitality has been splendid,'' choirmaster James Wallace said.
"Families of current St. George's students Kaitlin Mulderig and Alex Jones have hosted us in their lovely homes, and we have encountered a friendly face at every turn.'' The choir sang at the Anglican Cathedral on Sunday, Saltus on Monday, and at a reception for friends, parents, alumni and students at Waterloo House on Wednesday.
Five Bermudians are students at St. George's School.
After a final performance at Bermuda High School for girls on Thursday, the choir returned to Rhode Island, from where the group scattered for the remainder of the holiday to the various states and countries they call home.
