Organist to perform
a local church next weekend.
Joyce Finch Johnson, AAGO, will showcase her talents in an Organ Recital at Christ Church in Devonshire on October 26.
The 8 p.m. recital, held under the patronage of Premier Pamela Gordon, will feature Johnson performing 12 pieces ranging from Bach to her own "Free Improvisation''.
The Spelman College professor, who also serves as the Chair of the Department of Music, holds a Doctor of Music in Piano Performance and in 1989 became an Associate of the American Guild of Organist (AAGO).
She plays both solo piano and solo organ recitals in addition to conducting workshops, playing with chamber music groups and accompanying distinguished artists.
She was the chosen organist for the televised Communion Service reuniting the Northern and Southern Presbyterian churches at its 195th General Assembly in Atlanta, Georgia.
And in the summer of 1996, Mrs. Johnson performed in the Festival de Musique Baroque in Souvigny, France.
Mrs. Johnson has also been the recipient of numerous awards including the Spelman College presidential Award for Distinguished Service and an award from the National Black Caucus.
