UN day marked by park concert
multi-cultural concert in Victoria Park, Hamilton.
Starting at 4 p.m., the concert has the theme "unity in diversity'', and is being organised by Pembroke members of the Baha'i faith.
It will be opened by Cultural Affairs officer Ms Ruth Thomas and feature Portuguese dance and song, West Indian music, calypso, gombeys, rap and jazz.
And it will pay tribute to Bermuda's Olympic athletes by presenting them with special certificates.
Meanwhile, the Baha'i community of Warwick has organised an around-the-parish walk, run and prayer vigil for Sunday, which will begin in Astwood Park at three different times during the day.
Mr. Lloyd Williams, vice-chairman of the Warwick Baha'i Spiritual Assembly, explained that the event is a continuing pledge to the Moment of Consciousness, an Island-wide anti-drug campaign that climaxed on the same day last year.
The first Warwick-wide trek will begin by torchlight at midnight on Saturday, led by marathon runner Mr. Ray Ming. A brief sunrise prayer service with readings from Christian, Jewish, Moslem and Baha'i scriptures will precede the 6 a.m. start of the second walk. Another torchlight march will begin at 10 p.m.
Mr. Williams expressed hope that individuals and community groups would join them "for love, unity and brotherhood''. Mr. Bruce Sharpe, chairman of the Warwick Community Action Group, has already pledged his group's support and representatives of the National Alcohol and Drug Agency will also be participating.
The Baha'i faith, which has about 100 followers on the Island, places great emphasis on the unity of humanity.
