Antone (Tony) DaCosta
Antone Lavon (Tony) DaCosta was born on December 11, 1951 to Cecil G. DaCosta and Velma B. DaCosta (née Anderson) at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Bermuda.
The grandson of George A. DaCosta, the first headmaster of the Berkeley Institute, he was educated in Bermuda at Central School, Berkeley Institute and Warwick Academy, and in the US at Yellow Springs High School, Xenia High School and Central State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He was an excellent scholar, consistently finishing at the top of all classes and received the Government Scholarship to attend High School in 1962.
He was an all-round athlete involved in track and field, cross country and soccer throughout his life.
Tony was also an outstanding musician who mastered the guitar, which he played throughout his life.
He achieved the rank of First Lieutenant in the British Army (Bermuda Regiment) after being trained at Sandhurst Military Academy in England and commanding A Company during a period of civil unrest in his island home.
His career included a long term involvement as a Bermuda customs officer and other management positions.
Tony had been married to Linda (Samuels) DaCosta Bynum. Following his divorce, he was engaged in a long-term relationship with his significant other, Marcia Robinson, who was with him until his untimely passing.
Tony passed away on April 1, 2010, in his sleep, quietly and unobtrusively as he had lived his life.
Despite being a "loner", Tony was always a positive influence on all he came into contact with, being known as a deep thinker and wise man.
The world was a much better place as a result of Tony's life, and he will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tony is survived by his brother, Chester (and Barbara) DaCosta of Indianapolis, Indiana, his sister, Elizabeth R. DaCosta Kauffman of Richmond, Virginia, his daughters, Nicole Lavon DaCosta Wilson of Xenia, Ohio and Dr. Kneia DaCosta of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, three grandchildren, his significant other, Marcia Robinson, and many other relatives and friends.
