New missionaries on Island
Bermuda has two new Mormon – also known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – missionaries.
Elder Peterson is 20 years old and comes from Sacramento, California, while Elder Ficklin, also 20, hails from Augusta, Georgia.
Representing the Mormon Church with over 14 million converts, the young Elders are but two of over 55,000 young people like themselves, who are currently volunteering two years of their lives without pay, to full-time service throughout the world. Those who are assigned to assist the church and people of Bermuda come here for six months and then return to New York City to complete their service. After two years as missionaries, they return to their homes and pre-mission lives to pursue advanced schooling, marriage, and vocational interests.
As missionaries, they live by a strict moral code and have a demanding schedule. Their typical day begins at 6.30 a.m. with prayer, exercise, gospel study, breakfast, planning and preparation for the day. By 10 a.m. they begin proselyting, teaching, visiting those in need, and performing volunteer service. They take an hour for lunch and dinner, and return to their apartment by 9.30 p.m. for journal writing, further study and prayer. At 10.30 p.m. they retire for sleep.
Monday is their day for haircuts, laundry, shopping, and writing letters etc., with occasional visits to island attractions and sites.
"We are thrilled to be here on this beautiful island. We have met so many, good and friendly people in Bermuda and enjoy serving and sharing the message of 'The Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ'.
" Families are central to our Father in Heaven's plan of happiness for all His children and we earnestly desire to bring this wonderful and important message to everyone."
