Tropical storm can’t deter online church

The Rev Nicholas Dill broadcasts on Reign 360. The online radio station brodcast a service during Hurricane Leslie last Sunday.

Members of the Anglican community were able to unite together this past Sunday, in spite of services being cancelled due to Tropical Storm Leslie, through an online worship service on the newly created online Christian Radio Station, the Radio Project. The brainchild of Wayne Hackman, youth minister for Pembroke Parish, the Radio Project was launched a few weeks ago as a discipleship project out of St. Monica’s Mission and currently broadcasts a live show, Reign 360, every Wednesday evening at 8pm.When churches around the island were faced with the decision of whether to cancel their services for the safety of parishoners travelling, according to the Rev Nick Dill, minister for the Pembroke Parish, Mr Hackman reportedly said: “We can always broadcast online.”Since the church now has the equipment, Rev Dill thought it would be a brilliant idea, although not live.Instead the ministerial team at Pembroke, and their families, became involved in the development and pre-recording of the service which broadcast at 11am and again at 6pm on Sunday.Rev Sami Musa and one of Rev. Dill's children did the scripture readings, while prayers were organised by Rev. Anthony Pettit, of St. Paul’s, Paget. The service leader and “DJ” for was Wayne Hackman.“We had over 60 people” listening throughout, explained Rev. Dill, with reports of listeners in Turkey, Canada, the US and the UK, as well as families throughout the Island.“We’ve had great feedback, too,” he shared. “It’s given us the encouragement to do this again.”Although they don't see this becoming a weekly event, the church does see the benefit of repeating the feat in future for special events, and also in light of the possiblity of future church cancellations due to storms.Envisaging families gathered around computer speakers, Rev Dill shared: “This really shows how we are united in our spirit. Even though we couldn't be together, we were united.”For those who missed the service, an MP3 is available for download at The Radio Project's website, http://theradioproject.net/
