Former Bermuda Idol and recording artist Larrita Adderley can now add author to her list of accomplishments. Her recently published book, Float: Trusting in God to Carry You, shares some of her personal experiences of being carried by God through life.“It was so much happening around me. My life was just hectic [with] work, relationships, church ... life,” said Ms Adderley, who won Hott 107.5’s vocal competition in 2007. “One day after work I went to a familiar place were I love to go to release stress. I jumped in the water to cool off and relax.“While I was floating in the water, God gave me the inspiration for the book. He told me to just ‘float’. Float and trust in the fact that He will carry me through everything. God asked me to trust him. So I did.”She combined stories of Jesus’s experience with those from her own life. “One of the stories that really inspired me while writing was the story of Jesus out in the boat during the storm. Jesus was sleeping and everyone else was watching the storm develop with fear. But Jesus was at ease, resting in the faith that God would protect them. That is the kind of faith I want to have and want to share.”The well-known gospel singer was raised in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Although baptised at 14, she says she has always been “a believer” because of the foundation set by her parents and grandparents. “I currently attend Midland Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church. I also attend Glory Temple New Testament Church of God. People ask me how I can attend two very different churches. But I believe that there is only one God, one faith and one baptism. So, I attend whatever church the spirit leads me to, and it works for me.” Despite that, her faith journey has not always been easy. The struggles solidified her relationship with God, but strongly tested her faith. “I have a lot of stories. Many times I did not know how I was going to make it. I would ask God, ‘What next? What do you have for me? Why do I keep going through these break-ups and these failures?’ “I felt that sometimes I could not even be used for God because of everything I was going through. “But by faith and by reading His word I am now able to look in the mirror and float. I know He carried me and I am proud of who I am. I got this.”Such experiences taught Ms Adderley how to really lean on God and trust in His timing and His plan for her life. “There was a time in my life where I was unemployed, and God told me to volunteer. I really wanted to work with children, so I volunteered at Heritage Worship Centre. I loved everyone there — the teachers, the children, the parents. My life became filled with so much purpose but there was no money in the budget to hire me.“God told me that He would make room for me. So I kept going. I volunteered for 11 months, trusting that God put me there because that was where I was meant to be. Eventually, I was given a paid position and four years later I’m still there.”Her creativity helped make the transition from writing songs to writing a book an easy one. She hopes her book will inspire others.“I hope readers will read this book and become ‘floaters’. I pray that they will know that trusting God is important, in all aspects of our lives. Trust God in your everyday life. God wants us to have big faith. John 8:36 reads, ‘Who the son sets free is truly free indeed.’”She was recently certified as a life coach and incorporates her faith into her work. “It’s just natural in me to encourage somebody. It is what I do. I am a singing evangelist and chaplain. So, everything that I do, every part of my life, relates to encouraging others. As a life coach, I still talk about Jesus and connect my faith into this new venture. “I know that I on my own am not worthy, but through His grace, God has blessed me with the courage to share my life with others. It’s all about learning and teaching.”• Contact Larrita Adderley at adderleylarrita@gmail.com. Float: Trusting in God to Carry You is available on Amazon. Hard copies will be available locally soon
