St Peter’s to hold coronation service tomorrow
The oldest still-operational Anglican church in the western hemisphere will hold a special service tomorrow to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.
A spokeswoman for the friends of St Peter’s Church said: “As the new monarch of Great Britain, King Charles becomes the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, so it is fitting this is recognised in the oldest Anglican church outside of the British Isles.”
During her 60th year as monarch, Queen Elizabeth II designated the church “their majesties chappell.”
The church, established in 1612, was first given this designation during the reign of King William III and Queen Mary II in the 1690s.
It is Bermuda’s only royal chapel and one of four outside the British Isles, the other three are in Canada.
The King went to the church during his visit to the island in 1970s, while he was the Prince of Wales.
The service will be on Sunday, May 7 at 11am.
