Pen is written and ink is dry – Allah knows your choices

Schools and offices shut as Hurricane Lee passed by Bermuda (File photograph)

What a terrifying week we in Bermuda, as well as many countries around the world, have experienced! Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes … the mass loss of lives and the destruction makes it really difficult to remain optimistic and hard not to ask why.

One begins to question if these catastrophes are as a consequence of our sins. We wonder if God is angry with us. Another theory is these catastrophes are occurring because of global warming, pollution, environmental abuse by the earth’s custodians – us, we the people.

So many questions, so many theories so many questions left unanswered. Most people say that we can’t question God and of course, the scientists have their conclusions which do not include God.

From an Islamic point of view Muslims believe in the Qadr of Allah. Al-Qadr is the belief in predestination. This means that Allah already knows everything that will happen, and nothing happens unless it is according to Allah's will. However, this does not mean that the choices people make are not free choices. Instead, it means that Allah knows what people will chose to do. It sums up the meaning of “the pen is written and the ink is dry”. It is written and it will be as it will be.

I also know that calamities happen to good people too. The Koran says that we all will be tested, those who believe are tested even more: “And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirun (the patient).” 2:151

So we must patiently persevere and glorify Allah no matter the circumstances. We must praise God always, in good and in bad times. May Allah give us the strength to face difficulties with patience.

Allah has promised us a great reward for patience and perseverance whilst continuing to keep the faith, no matter what. I have to stop writing now, the winds are strong and the lights are beginning to flicker. Bermuda be safe and be sensible during this time. Say, “Sufficient is Allâh as a witness between me and you. He knows all that lies in the heavens and on the earth. And lost are those who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allâh.” 29:52

“Seek help through prayer and patience, indeed Allah is with those who are patient.” 2:153

As salaam alaikum. (Peace be unto you.)
