Now is not the time to make rash decisions

After gameweek one there will be some happy Fantasy League managers and some bosses tempted to rip up their team and start again.

But one round of data is too soon to make wholesale changes ― scientists would not run an experiment just once and rely on that result ― so it might be worth giving your squad another couple of weeks.

Only one manager in The Royal Gazette league made it into three figures after week one with Antoine Minors and his A La Attaque scoring 102 points, largely thanks to Erling Haaland, Richarlison and new Manchester City signing Tijjani Reijnders.

Those players will be doing well to match their tallies from week one as City are at home to Tottenham.

Don’t get caught out by the early deadline of 2.30pm on Friday.

Friday

West Ham United v Chelsea (4pm)

It would be a huge decision to include any West Ham player in your team given their abject performance against Sunderland last week. With the home fans likely to protest if their side starts badly, this could be the time for Chelsea to kick into gear.

Cole Palmer, the most selected player in Fantasy League, should get plenty of the ball and Joao Pedro can terrorise the West Ham defence, who were not improved by the £20 million signing of goalkeeper Mads Hermansen from Leicester.

Prediction: 0-2

Saturday

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur (8.30am)

Probably the two most impressive teams in matchweek one go at it here.

New signing Rayan Ait-Nouri and the injury-free John Stones made impressive starts to the season for the home side and should feature highly in any defensive plans, with Rodri a month away from returning.

It seems as if Tottenham always have the longest injury list in the division with Dejan Kulsevski, James Maddison, Destiny Udogie among those absent. Mohammed Kudus picked up ten points in the opening week and should again be prominent on the break.

Prediction: 2-1

Bournemouth v Wolverhampton Wanderers (11am)

Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo was the highest scoring midfielder last week with 15 points after a brilliant display against Liverpool. He and striker Evanilson should create plenty of chances against a Wolves side set for another season of struggle.

It would take a brave man to draft in any of the away side’s players with defensive midfielder Andre their highest scorer with just four points last week.

Prediction: 3-1

Brentford v Aston Villa (11am)

Keith Andrews’s first game in charge of Brentford could hardly have gone worse with a 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest and until they show signs of improvement it is best to steer clear of their players.

Aston Villa were static in the transfer market and their best defender Ezri Konsa is suspended after being sent off in the 0-0 draw against Newcastle last week. Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins are top players and should start to rack up some big points soon

Prediction: 1-2

Burnley v Sunderland (11am)

The two promoted sides made contrasting starts to the Premier League season with Sunderland beating West Ham and Burnley being thrashed by Tottenham.

Sunderland defender Daniel Ballard was the highest scorer in the competition last week with 17 points and his ability in the air makes him the target for every set piece.

Despite their 3-0 defeat last week, Burnley did get 14 shots at the Tottenham goal, which suggests that they are capable of creating chances in this game.

Prediction 1-1

Arsenal v Leeds United (1.30pm)

Arsenal were far from impressive but still beat Manchester United 1-0 last week. It will be interesting to see how new signing Eberechi Eze, signed after an injury to Kai Havertz, will fit into the team but this could be the game in which Viktor Gyokeres announces himself to the Premier League.

Leeds dominated the game in a 1-0 win at home to Everton last week and showed enough to suggest that they are capable of staying in this division, but this game is likely to test them to their limit.

Prediction: 2-0

Sunday

Crystal Palace v Nottingham Forest (10am)

Palace are one of the most improved teams in the Premier League but it remains to be seen how they will cope with regularly playing on Thursday and Sunday, their Conference League campaign getting started in midweek.

I got it wrong last week in predicting that Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood could not keep scoring at the rate he was, but I am clinging to the fact that his two goals came against a poor Brentford side.

Callum Hudson-Odoi also caught the eye in that match and is worth considering as a relatively cheap midfield transfer.

Prediction: 1-1

Everton v Brighton & Hove Albion (10am)

Everton play their first home match at their new Hill Dickinson stadium but that may have a negative impact given the atmosphere generated at Goodison Park probably helped the team to survive in a number of recent campaigns.

Jack Grealish will surely start this game and is worthy of consideration this week as is Georginio Rutter of Brighton.

He is listed as a midfielder but started in the central striker role last week and should get some chances to open his account this season

Prediction: 1-1

Fulham v Manchester United (12.30pm)

Manchester United looked an improved team in defeat against Arsenal last week with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha looking lively in attack, but goalkeeper problems persist.

Fulham were lucky to come away with a point from their game against Brighton last week. With no fresh blood in the team they could be expected to struggle for the majority of the campaign.

Prediction 1-3

Monday

Newcastle United v Liverpool (4pm)

The biggest game of the weekend brings matchweek two to a close and Liverpool’s games look set to feature plenty of goals this season.

Arne Slot’s revamped champions are struggling to find the balance between attack and defence, with the back line receiving less protection than they did last season.

No Liverpool defender picked up more than three points last week and that defence will be without Jeremie Frimpong this week.

Alexander Isak will again be missing and in his absence Newcastle will continue to struggle for goals.

Prediction: 1-3
