Police snatch win in Duckett Memorial

Police take on The Rest in the Duckett Memorial game at Police Field on Saturday. Police won 21-20.

Police won a nail-biter against The Rest as the annual George Duckett Memorial day finished in thrilling fashion at Police Field. In a game that went down to the wire, only a blown penalty in the dying moments of the game stopped The Rest from winning. As it was, Dan Cole’s penalty for Police eventually decided matters, giving his side a narrow 21-20 winCole’s kick was the first time the men in blue had taken the lead, as The Rest surged ahead from the start. A Gareth Williams’ try, which Greg Fraser converted, and then a Fraser penalty gave The Rest a 10-6 lead at half time with Mike Kane keeping Police in touch with two penalties. After the break The Rest moved further ahead with a Tom Healy try, and although Cole grabbed one back, Healy crossed again to put The Rest 20-13 ahead.Police though would not be denied and Neville Zuill crossed, before Cole kicked a penalty to put them 21-20 up. Even then The Rest should have won the game, but instead of kicking a makeable penalty from inside the 22, they opted to run, and Police turned the ball over. The men’s seconds game was a much easier win for Police, who ran in three first-half tries through David Sidders (2) and John Jackson to open up a 19-0 lead.Jackson extended his side’s lead to 26-0 soon after the re-start, and it was only then that The Rest began to impose themselves on the game. Ndaviyah Williams, Jeff Sangster and Phillip Hall all scored tries to give the scoreline a more respectable look, and it would have been even closer if The Rest had been able to kick their conversions. In the Ladies’ matches, the seconds game ended in a 1-1 tie, while The Rest narrowly edged the Police in the firsts game, running out 3-2 winners.
