Bird’s side look to pressurise Paraguay

Bermuda’s national rugby team will be look reach the next stage of the 2015 World Cup qualifiers when they take on Paraguay away today.Lawrence Bird’s side, who beat Guyana in Caribbean Championship final in June, made the long journey to South America earlier this week to take on Paraguay who have home field advantage as they have the higher world ranking.Bird said he had been encouraged by the team had acquitted themselves in the training sessions in the build to the winner-takes-all match.“Most of the side came in on Wednesday and the rest came on Thursday, so the focus was to get them settled in and ready for the game given the 22-hour trip to get here,” said Bird.“We had another training session today (Friday) and the boys are very focused on the game, there was a sense that the guys would think this was the big prize but they are tuned into the road ahead and are raring to go.”Paraguay beat Peru, Colombia and Venezuela comfortably to advance to face Bermuda, and not much is known about the strengths of South Americans.Pressure will the order of the day for the Islanders who will send out the strongest side possible to get the result required to advance.“They came though their qualifying rather easy, so we want to apply pressure and get on top of them,” Bird added.“We will be sending out a very strong line-up to attack them from the start, but we know very little about them and just have to be prepared for anything.”Kick off is scheduled for 5pm Bermuda time.
