Teachers Rugby Club captain Hadleigh Tucker contributed 30 points in his team’s 75-14 triumph over Renegades to pick up their first victory in the Bermuda Rugby Football Union Men's League on Sunday.

Leading from the front, Tucker scored two tries and booted in ten conversions for the champions to pick up their first victory of the season at North Field, National Sports Centre.

Jaden Hill, Ja’kee Simons and Jahniko Francis also scored a brace of tries each, while Kelin Savanno Williams, Matthew Groves and Gendy Moreno Iglesias crossed the whitewash once.

Jamie Baum scored both tries for Renegades, with both converted by Calum Maule.

Tucker was pleased with the result, which came after Teachers started the season with a 45-12 loss to Police in the Duckett Memorial.

“After the first league game and a loss to a deserving Police XV, the win against Renegades has been a welcome boost for the players,” Tucker said.

“In the lead up to the game we reflected on the Duckett Memorial and as a group made some adjustments to our mindset.

“We want to promote a fun and exciting style of play and I think we were able to return to form this past weekend.

“I’m especially happy with some of our younger players that were able to connect defensively through the game. It is a gratifying positive to see the youth in our squad bounce back and improve.

“We will take the win with a grain of salt and keep on working to represent the club as best we can throughout the season.”

In the women’s league, Teachers maintained a 100 per cent record by defeating Renegades 37-0.

Captain Heidi Groves and Lauren Rothwell scored two tries each, with a try apiece from Lysmeire Santana, Christina Halliday and Bella Greene. Santana also chipped in with a conversion.

“I am incredibly proud of the Teachers Rugby Club women’s team,” Groves said.

“Our hard work and dedication have brought us to the top of the table, a position we hope to maintain.

“After finishing a very close second last season and narrowly missing out on the league title, the team has come back with renewed determination to claim that top spot. This is our season and we’re committed to keeping the momentum going.

“It’s also a great bonus that much of our squad forms part of the Bermuda women’s team. While touch and contact rugby differ in their set of rules, that experience certainly helps.”

Police saw off Bermudianas 25-5 to record their first win of the season. Akila Craig had the ball over the line twice, while Becky Garley, Amanda Swan and Kaley Deluka scored once each.

Zaria Codrington was the only scorer for Bermudianas, a new team built on youth players.
