Bermuda rugby team travel to take on Guyana
Bermuda’s senior men’s rugby team have travelled to South America to take on Guyana.
Brian Archibald’s team will take on the home side at the National Park rugby field in Georgetown, with the match starting at 4pm Bermuda time.
It is a step into the unknown for the travelling party with Archibald unsure what to expect from their hosts as the two teams have not played each other for a number of years.
“I’m not really sure what to expect as we certainly haven’t played each other in XVs since I’ve been on the island and that is 11 years,” Archibald said.
“We don't really know much about them but we've assumed that they'll be athletes, they'll be quick, fast, big and strong, but in terms of where they are skillwise, we have absolutely no idea. So we’re just worrying about ourselves.”
As ever with Bermuda’s international teams it has proved hard to get a first-choice team on the plane, with a number of big players forced to stay at home.
“We’re definitely missing three or four players that we would have liked to have because of work commitments, personal events and injuries,” Archibald said.
“But I think the people who are coming to step in can still do the job that we want them to do. We’re concentrating on the players we do have and trying to reiterate to the group not to worry about everybody else and concentrate on the things that we're good at.
“Our strength is that we’re more rounded in terms of being a mobile team throughout the park, apart from maybe one to five, than some of the other teams around this region.
“We’re probably not as fit as we should be but we want to play, we want to try and get our hands on the ball, try and keep it for three or four phases and then when it starts to open up that’s when we can use our strength.”
The match against Guyana is an opportunity for Bermuda to pick up valuable regional points, which go towards placings in Rugby Americas North, and the rugby side has a busy few weeks coming up.
“We’ve got three more fixtures coming up, including one more international,” Archibald said.
“We have a game against Cayman on May 13 and then we've been quite fortunate this year in that two travelling sides are coming to play.
“One of them is USA South, which is made up of players from the Georgia, Florida, Alabama and North Carolina, and the other is the Atlantic Privateers from the East Coast of Canada.
