Tyler Smith back at training
Olympian Tyler Smith has resumed training as he continues with his recovery from three surgeries.
The triathlete went under the knife on his Achilles and wrist at the end of last year. Smith suffered a setback after complications from removal of a soft-tissue lesion at the end of February left him immobile for more than a week.
“My recovery is going pretty well,” the 26-year-old told The Royal Gazette.
“I’m back doing all three sports now — swim, bike and run. Swimming is the easiest. I’ve been back in the pool for the longest. It was the first thing I could return to and then I started running and cycling.
That’s step one, now I’ve to just continue with rehab and keep getting stronger every day — get myself in a position where I can manage full training.”
Smith, whose last big race at the Paris Olympics last July, has not set a competitive return date.
“That will be determined by how the recovery process goes,” he said.
“I’m not setting any timelines on that right now. You don’t want to rush these sort of things because there’s really no pressure to race this year, unless if I want to.
“As soon as I’m physically feeling I can race, I’ll have that conversation with my coaches. The season usually ends in October-November so its like, why rush things if could just get back after this year, have a good winter target a really good 2026.
“There’s a lot of exciting things coming next year, CAC Games and start of the Olympic qualification so that will be the target.”
Smith, who switched his training base from Boulder, Colorado, to Girona, Spain, after the Olympics, did the bike leg of the Cambridge Beaches Triathlon in a team event with his parents last October. However, the Olympian has no plans to compete on the island while recovering.
“As soon as I’m healthy enough to do any competitive training, I’ll be leaving to join my training group in Spain,” he added.
“The local races are really not aligned with what I’m trying to accomplish in the sport right now.
“I did a bike race in December for fun when I waiting for surgery, but the local bike racing scene is not my priority right now. It’s getting back to the World Triathlon circuit that I’m focusing on.”
